When Antares first started business in 2000 our operation was solely concerned with training Field Guides.

Recent times however have meant that we needed to diversify the business and although we still spend a significant amount of time training potential guides, we also spend time with school children using the bush environment we live in as a perfect medium for teaching curriculum-based subjects.

The centre also lends itself perfectly to accommodate self-catering guests who want to spend time in the bush. For these guests we offer additional activites such as specialised birding tours. searching for the ever-elusive rarities in the area such as Pel's Fishing Owls and others, conducting wildlife tours on the Grietjie Nature Reserve or even into Kruger National Park.

We have also recently been involved with introducing school children from some of the local communities to the environment. This is done in partnership with the Kruger to Canyons Birding Route, a division of BirdLife SA. Selected children are taken into Kruger National Park or around Grietjie Nature Reserve in an open game viewer and shown as much as possible about the birds and animals found in these areas. This work is most rewarding as many of the children have never encountered a live elephant or a giraffe before and the look of amazement on their little faces can not be described adequately.
